Grantham Briefing Papers analyse climate change and environmental research linked to work at Imperial College London, setting it in the context of national and international policy and the future research agenda. This paper and other Grantham publications are available from: www.imperial.ac.uk/grantham/publicationsThis paper looks at the barriers and opportunities for the mass deployment of solar-thermal technologies and offers a vision for the future of solar-thermal systems. HEADLINES: -Heat constitutes about half of total global energy demand. Solar heat offers key advantages over other renewable sources for meeting this demand through distributed, integrated systems. -Solar heat is a mature sustainable energy technology capable of mass deployment. There is significant scope for increasing the installed solar heat capacity in Europe. -Only a few European countries are close to reaching the EU target of 1 m2 of solar-thermal installations per person. -One key challenge for the further development of the solar-thermal market arises from issues related to the intermittency of the solar resource, and the requirement for storage and/or backup systems. The former increases investment costs and limits adaptability. -An analysis of EU countries with good market development, suggests that obligation schemes are the best policy option for maximising installations. These do not present a direct cost to the public budget, and determine the growth of the local industry in the long term. -Solar-thermal collectors can be combined with photovoltaic (PV) modules to produce hybrid PV-thermal (PV-T) collectors. These can deliver both heat and electricity simultaneously from the same installed area and at a higher overall efficiency compared to individual solar-thermal and PV panels installed separately. --Hybrid PV-T technology provides a particularly promising solution when roof space is limited or when heat and electricity are required at the same time.Preprin

Roadmap for the next-generation hybrid photovoltaic-thermal solar energy collectors

    Get PDF
For hybrid photovoltaic-thermal collectors to become competitive with other types of solar energy converters, they must offer high performance at fluid outlet temperatures above 60¿°C, as is required for space heating and domestic hot water provision, which together account for nearly 50% of heat demand. A roadmap is presented of the technological advances required to achieve this goal. Strategies for reducing convective, radiative and electrical losses at elevated temperature are discussed, and an experimental characterisation of a novel transparent low-emissivity coating for photovoltaic solar cells is presented. An experimentally-validated simulation formalism is used to project the performance of different combinations of loss-reduction strategies implemented together. Finally, a techno-economic analysis is performed to predict the price points at which the hybrid technologies along the roadmap become competitive with non-hybrid photovoltaic and solar thermal technologies. The most advanced hybrid technology along the roadmap employs an evacuated cavity, a transparent low-emissivity coating, and silicon heterojunction photovoltaic cellsPeer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Large Scale dynamics of Brown trout populations across Navarra Rivers (North Spain)

    Get PDF
Most studies on the population dynamics of stream-living salmonids have attempted to elucidate the causes of variation in demographic traits or population abundance by analyzing population time series vis-á-vis environmental data. In order to express the results on a scale compatible with fishery management strategies, most studies have been done at the scale of a stream reach, a stream or a river basin with few studies focused on the population dynamics at larger geographic scales. Our goal is to determine the extent to which the effects of both, exogenous and endogenous factors actually describe the variations in abundance of brown trout populations inhabiting separated river basins across a large and environmentally heterogeneous territory. We tested whether the trout abundance across a large territory involving distinct populations could be described by determining the extent to which exogenous and endogenous drivers underlie the per capita population growth rate estimated from long-term time series in a way similar to that previously assessed at smaller geographical scales. We have developed a simple multivariate linear model that synthetically combines an index of large-scale climate variation with mean population abundance. This model has been built on the basis of a data set encompassing 18-year quantifications of abundance at 68 sampling stations. The results of our simulation model predict mean trout abundance with less than 10% error

Experiences Developing Safe and Fault-Tolerant Tele-Operated Service Robots. A Case Study in Shipyards

    Get PDF
Human operators use tele-operated service robots for performing more or less hazardous operations (manipulation of heavy and/or dangerous products) in more or less hostile environments (nuclear reactors, space missions, warehouses, etc). Anyway, independently of the operation, the robot has to interact with both the environment it is working on and with human operators. Therefore, it is essential that the design (which include both software and hardware) of the robot involves no risk, or at least an acceptable level of risk, neither for the operators, nor for the environment nor for the robot itself. Nevertheless, it is not always possible to make a system free of failures in its design or operation. Apart from the risk inherent to the use of the mechanisms themselves, these systems work in hazardous environments, where the probability of the risk is higher than normal. Should a failure happen, its consequences could even involve the loss of human lives. (Neumann, 1994) documents many cases of computer-related failures, such as the Therac-25 (a radiation-therapy device), the missiles shield in Saudi Arabia, etc. Nevertheless, safety aspects are seldom included in the early phases of the system design process from the beginning, even though they are a critic aspect. Generally, safety has to conform and adapt to the already designed system and not vice versa, when it is widely known that safety involves not only the design of the software but also the hardware. Even more, a simple hardware solution can eliminate a hazard or simplify the software design in many situations. This research has been funded by the Spanish CICYT project MEDWSA (TIN2006-15175- C05-02) and the Regional Government of Murcia Séneca Program (02998-PI-05)

Double-hit lymphoma (DHL) is a rare type of lymphoma with concurrent chromosomal translocations of C-MYC with BCL2 or BCL6, associated with unfavorable prognosis. We describe a case of DHL in a 79-year-old female patient previously diagnosed with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) with an early relapse in the ascitic fluid. A seven-color multiparametric flow cytometry immunophenotyping study of the ascitic fluid was carried out, and revealed 99.78% of large in size and high cellular complexity B-cells positive for CD19, CD10 (64.27%), CD45 dim, CD22 dim, CD25 (60%), CD43 bright, CD38 bright, and IgM (18.53%); and negative for CD20, CD5, CD23, CD79b, CD103, CD200, CD11c, and FMC7, and 78.99% without light chain expression and 21% with Lambda chain restriction. Due to the expression of CD19 and CD10 with overexpression of BCL-2 protein and due to CD43 and CD38 positivity detected, those cells showed features between DLBCL and Burkitt lymphoma. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) confirmed both c-MYC/IGH and BCL2/IGH rearrangement. Our findings may help to identify cases requiring additional cytogenetic analysis. © 2015 International Clinical Cytometry Society.S

Stress compensation by gap monolayers for stacked InAs/GaAs quantum dots solar cells

    Get PDF
In this work we report the stacking of 10 and 50 InAs quantum dots layers using 2 monolayers of GaP for stress compensation and a stack period of 18 nm on GaAs (001) substrates. Very good structural and optical quality is found in both samples. Vertical alignment of the dots is observed by transmission electron microscopy suggesting the existence of residual stress around them. Photocurrent measurements show light absorption up to 1.2 μm in the nanostructures together with a reduction in the blue response of the device. As a result of the phosphorus incorporation in the barriers, a very high thermal activation energy (431 meV) has also been obtained for the quantum dot emission
